Crepes, etc.

January 26, 2010

Crêpes etc is an adorable crêperie in the newish maryland plaza area of the central west end.  As much I like this place, I do not frequent it nearly enough.  Luckily, I happened to find myself here this past Saturday with Emily and her roommate for brunch after an awesome lululemon yoga class.

This place describes itself as a traditional crêperie with a modern french twist, adapting the traditional crêpe in new and creative ways.  The menu has something to offer for just about anyone.  While they obviously specialize in sweet and savory crêpes, there are plenty of sandwich, salad/soup, and pastry options to chose from.  There’s also a good coffee selection, but it was their hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows which made this last visit special for me.  The hot chocolate itself wasn’t especially outstanding, but the marshmallow was, and I would definitely recommend it to all you other hot chocolate fans like me.

I also had the wild mushroom crêpe filled with roasted chanterelle, oyster, and black trumpet mushrooms, which was fantastic.  There was just enough mushroom filling to give it that wonderful rich, deep, hearty flavor, and the proportions of filling to crêpe were perfect.  It wasn’t dry at all and the sauce topping it didn’t hurt the situation, making this my favorite crêpe Ive had here so far.  I’ve previously enjoyed the Nutella crêpe, and would have to recommend it as well…although to be fair that’s one that is pretty impossible to mess up!  I’d really like to try their gelato next time, but this may have to wait till the weather warms up a bit.

The atmosphere is very laid back and the place has a nice clean design.  It’s inviting and the ideal weekend place to relax and catch up over some great food.  They also have wifi, making it good for getting some work done during off peak hours.
